Jack of All Trades, Master of Some
The old saying “jack of all trades, master of none” has often been used to warn against spreading yourself too thin. But in today’s creative industry, especially with the rise of AI, that phrase deserves a rethink.
When I started my career as a Multimedia Artist, I slowly began to realize that this job is no joke — or maybe it is? Each discipline demands its own mastery. In front-end development, there are countless tools and frameworks evolving faster than you can keep up. In graphic design, you need to understand principles, composition, and color theory. In photography and videography, lighting and sound are everything, followed by the long hours of post-production.
The truth is, it’s nearly impossible to master all of these at once. No fresh graduate could realistically handle the full scope of this role right away. It takes time, patience, and years of practice to even scratch the surface of each craft.
But then came AI.
AI doesn’t replace creativity, but it does accelerate the process. Tasks that used to drain hours — editing, resizing, correcting, generating drafts — can now be done in minutes. This shift gives artists more time to explore, learn, and refine. Instead of being “master of none,” we can become “master of some”: choosing a few areas to specialize deeply in, while still keeping a broad creative range.
The modern multimedia artist isn’t unfocused — they’re empowered. With AI as a multiplier, versatility becomes a superpower. We can embrace being a jack of all trades, while strategically mastering the skills that matter most to us.
And hey, by the way... thanks to AI, I get to write short pieces like this and share my thoughts more easily.
